Governors Island
40.6895° N · 74.0168° W · The teletype shopMy dad spent thirty years in the Coast Guard as a communications systems specialist. When I was a kid he ran the teletype shop on Governors Island, and sometimes I'd tag along – tinkering with broken machines while he led his people. I thought I was there for the machines. Looking back, I was watching him: most patient with exactly the people everyone else had written off, serious about the mission without taking himself too seriously. I didn't have words for it then. It's been the standard ever since.
